St.
Mary-St. Augustine School was formed in the Spring
of 2008 when St. Mary’s of Belleville merged
with St. Augustine School, also in Belleville. This
first year has been a year of change. Through it all,
students are shining, bringing much recognition to
the “newest Catholic School in Belleville.”
We recently pulled this list together – our
accomplishments as a newly merged school so far this
first year (as of April 23, 2009):

highlights:

SMSA 5th & 6th grade girls Basketball Team are
1st Place Diocesan Champions,

SMSA 8th grade boys Volleyball Team are also 1st Place
Diocesan Champions

SMSA 8th gr. boys Volleyball team won 1st place in
the St. James Tournament at the beginning of March
Other
highlights:
Hallway
project at St. Mary-St. Augustine School. Some of
the teachers have been working on a plan to redecorate
the halls of our school. We will focus on the theme:”Looking
to the Future, Thankful for the Past”. A new
mural will greet visitors as they enter the doors
by the office. The Primary wing will become our “SMSA
Wing” and awards and pictures from our “new
school” will be displayed there. The Intermediate
hallway will be our “Looking at the Past”
Wing and awards and pictures from past classes at
St. Mary and St. Augustine Schools will be displayed.

The
first graduation at SMSA is a few weeks away. The
8th gr. Baccalaureate Mass will be Friday, May 22
at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s. The 8th gr. Graduation
Ceremony will be Saturday, May 23 at 2 p.m. at St.
Augustine’s

SMSA Math team sweeps Belleville East Math Contest,
coming in 1st place over all local schools participating
in the contest.

At the IL Grade School Music Association’s District
Solo and Ensemble Contest
February
28th at St. Clare School in O’Fallon, IL, five
of our SMSA music students received First Superior
ratings, 9 Division I ratings, and 7 Division 2 ratings.
-
Three of our SMSA students participated in the Final
Speech Meet on April 18 at St. Peter & Paul School
in Waterloo, earning 1st place ribbons.

One of our SMSA Jr. High teams won 1st place at Althoff
Catholic High School’s Science Olympiad in March.

One of our SMSA 7th graders was awarded 1st place
in the Computer Science/Library section at Althoff
Catholic High School’s Academic Challenge in
February.

SMSA received the National Endowment for the Humanities
Grant, bringing Great American Art Directly to our
Classrooms.
-
We recently went through our State and Diocesan Accreditation
at SMSA. We’ve received full state accreditation
and are now awaiting accreditation results from the
Diocese.

Our technology teacher was awarded a Diocesan Technology
Grant recently
